Lonavala, tucked into the Sahyadri hills between Mumbai and Pune, is a favorite weekend getaway — known for its monsoon-season waterfalls, old forts, and the sweet treat that shares its name.
Getting there
Lonavala sits right on the Mumbai–Pune railway line and highway, making it an easy 2–3 hour trip from either city.
Highlights
- Tiger’s Point (Tiger Leap) — a cliff-edge viewpoint over the valley, especially dramatic during monsoon when clouds roll through
- Bhaja & Karla Caves — ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves dating back over 2,000 years
- Lohagad Fort — a relatively easy trek up to a hilltop fort with panoramic views
- Rajmachi Point — another popular viewpoint, good for sunset
- Lonavala Lake — a calm spot for a short walk
Where to eat
Lonavala is famous for chikki (a jaggery-and-nut brittle) — there are entire shopping streets dedicated to it.
Practical tips
- Monsoon season (July–Sept) is when the waterfalls and greenery are at their best, but trails can be slippery
- It gets crowded on weekends with day-trippers from Mumbai and Pune — visit on a weekday if you can
